Abingdon's Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, by James Strong (ISBN-10: 0687400333, ISBN-13:)  978-0687400331) I use the King James Version of the Bible to look up verses by word reference. This concordance is absolute invaluable for any researcher who wants to know where any particular word, verse, story, or passage is found in the Bible. A "must have" for Bible researchers. Act of Treason: The Role of J. Edgar Hoover in the Assassination of President Kennedy, by Mark North (ISBN-10: 0881848778, ISBN-13: 978-0881848779)

(The) Acts and Monuments of the Christian Church (aka "Foxe's Book of Martyrs"), by John Foxe - text online (but unfinished) - "There was never a worse place or time to be religious than Europe in the 16th Century. These were cruel times. There was the death penalty for all but the most petty offences, and hangings were a popular spectator sport. Indeed, hanging was a lenient punishment: flaying, impaling, breaking on the wheel, and being hung upside down and sawn through from groin to scalp were alternatives. Lesser crimes such as begging were punished with flogging, branding or mutilation. Torture was widespread and trials, if held at all, often a travesty of justice." The full title of Foxe's original book is "Actes and Monuments of these latter and perilous days, touching matters of the Church, wherein are comprehended and described the great persecutions and horrible troubles that have been wrought and practised by the Romish prelates, specially in this realm of England and Scotland, from the year of our Lord 1000 unto the time now present; gathered and collected according to the true copies and writings certificatory, as well of the parties themselves that suffered, as also out of the bishops' registers, which were the doers thereof; by John Foxe." See also Project Gutenberg.

Actual Innocence: When Justice Goes Wrong and How To Make It Right, by Barry Scheck, Peter Neufeld, and Jim Dwyer - A ground-breaking book which shows how innocent people are routinely convicted in America's dysfunctional court systems. Scheck's Innocent Project has used DNA testing to get more than a few actually-innocent-but-convicted prisoners released from prison. (ISBN 0553526944, ISBN-10: 0451209826, ISBN-13: 978-0451209825)

Alcohol Can Be a Gas!: Fueling an Ethanol Revolution for the 21st Century, by David Blume (ISBN-10: 0979043778, ISBN-13: 978-0979043772) - "David Blume's Alcohol Can Be a Gas is the most comprehensive and understandable book on renewable fuels ever compiled. Over a quarter century in the making, the book explains the history, technology, and even the sociology of renewable fuels in a fashion that can be appreciated by the most accomplished in the ethanol and biodiesel fields, as well as the novice and young students of the issues."

America Deceived: Homeland Security Warning: Possession of this novel may result in unlimited detention, by E.A. Blayre III ( ISBN-10: 0-595-38523-0) This book has supposedly been banned. Big Brother allegedly pressured Amazon to drop this book. has one copy for $219.95, which amounts to de facto banning in view of the fact iUniverse Online Bookstore has it for $11.95. Ya gotta love the title! Your humble webmaster put it here so he wouldn't forget to buy a copy and read it to see what the brouhaha is all about.  Click here to see last link before Google Books bends to gov’t pressure.

American Medical Association Complete Medical Encyclopedia, by the American Medical Association (ISBN-10: 0812991001, ISBN-13: 978-0812991000)

America's Great Depression, by Murray N. Rothbard (ISBN-10: 0945466056, ISBN-13: 978-0945466055) - "In 'America's Great Depression', Professor Rothbard effectively demolishes the myths surrounding this tragic event. However, semi-literate pop-historians continue to ignore the fact that the depression was caused by government intervention. (Central bank manipulation is government intervention.) Rothbard's book stands out due to his refusal to reduce this complex event to a simple story of good (New Dealers, Socialists) versus evil ('capitalism'). Upon close examination of such accounts, it becomes clear that not only do "historians" get the facts wrong, they simply fail to comprehend them. Mainstream historians who refuse to even attempt to gain a basic understanding of economics have had their interpretations rendered embarrassingly obsolete by Rothbard."

America: The Last Best Hope (Volume I): From the Age of Discovery to a World at War, by Dr. William J. Bennett (ISBN-10: 1595551115, ISBN-13: 978-1595551115)

Anarchism and Other Essays, by Emma Goldman (ISBN-10: 0486224848, ISBN-13: 978-0486224848) "With the verve and the gift of trenchant simplification to which we have been accustomed, Ellul lays bare the fallacy that Christianity should normally be the ally of civil authority." - John Howard Yoder

Anarchy and Christianity, by Jacques Ellul (ISBN-10: 0802804950, ISBN-13: 978-0802804952) "Jacques Ellul blends politics, theology, history, and exposition in this analysis of the relationship between political anarchy and biblical faith. On the one hand, suggests Ellul, anarchists need to understand that much of their criticism of Christianity applies only to the form of religion that developed, not to biblical faith. Christians, on the other hand, need to look at the biblical texts and not reject anarchy as a political option, for it seems closest to biblical thinking. Ellul here defines anarchy as the nonviolent repudiation of authority. He looks at the Bible as the source of anarchy (in the sense of nondomination, not disorder), working through the Old Testament history, Jesus' ministry, and finally the early church's view of power as reflected in the New Testament writings. "With the verve and the gift of trenchant simplification to which we have been accustomed, Ellul lays bare the fallacy that Christianity should normally be the ally of civil authority." - John Howard Yoder

Black’s Law Dictionary, 8th Ed - 5th Edition and earlier are better for self-education purposes - Regarding this essential legal tool, Wikipedia says: "Black's Law Dictionary is the law dictionary for the law of the United States. It was founded by Henry Campbell Black. It has been cited as legal authority in many Supreme Court cases (see Secondary authority). The latest editions, including abridged and pocket versions, are useful starting points for the layman or student when faced with an unfamiliar legal word. It is the reference of choice for definitions in legal briefs and court opinions.

The first edition was published in 1891, and the second edition in 1910, long before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed in 1928. The sixth and earlier editions of the book also provided case citations for term cited, which some lawyers view as its most useful feature, providing a useful starting point with leading cases. The Internet made legal research easier than it ever had been, so many state- or circuit-specific case citations and outdated or overruled case citations were dropped from the seventh edition 1999. The eighth edition introduced a unique system of perpetually updated case citations and cross-references to legal encyclopedias.

Because many legal terms are derived from a Latin root word, the Dictionary gives a pronunciation guide for such terms. In addition, the applicable entries provide pronunciation transcriptions pursuant to those found among North American practitioners of law or medicine.

An online version of the latest edition can be accessed through the paid Westlaw legal information service and as of late 2006, West Academic has published Black's Law Dictionary Digital, 8th which has toolbars that integrate with Microsoft Word, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. The second edition of Black's Law Dictionary (1910) is now in the public domain. The first edition (1891) has been reprinted by the The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 0-9630106-0-3, as well as the second edition, ISBN 1-886363-10-2. An online version of either edition is difficult to come by, although first and second editions are available on the same CD from Archive CD Books USA."

I obtained my own clothbound 4th Edition Black's Law Dictionary from a local bar-member lawyer who was unconscious enough to trade it for the at-the-time newest hardback version I bought him. (Most lawyers just want to make money at simple things like divorce, bankruptcy, and probate. They aren't necessarily interested in being legal-history geeks. They especially are not interested in educating and empowering non-lawyers as to the elite shamanic secrets of their role as medium between so-called "labor resources" and the dominant members of the inherentely evil and inevitably corrupting stupid human pecking order euphemized as "government".)

The earlier editions of "Black's" (that's lawyer shorthand) are VERY MUCH more educationally helpful than the later editions. They are an absolute must-have for such as genealogists and individuals who want to understand, in greater historical detail, how human law is theoretically supposed to work. (This, of course, is ignoring the REAL-WORLD rule, "The judge can do whatever s/he pleases!")

I was given the CD version of the first and second editions for my latest birthday. I am very satisfied with them. You can copy and paste from the CD, which is VERY handy putting quotes into papers you might be working on. When I can afford it, I want to buy the reprinted hardbound books of the first and second editions, which I've seen sell for hundreds of dollars on Ebay.

Break, Blow, Burn: Camille Paglia Reads Forty-three of the World's Best Poems, by Camille Paglia (ISBN-10: 0375725393, ISBN-13: 978-0375725395) - People will inevitably disagree on what the world's best poems are, but I like the way Paglia writes, and I enjoyed the book. She has a bright mind, and I have always liked her intellectual honesty (e.g. she's an open lesbian who doesn't believe homosexuality is innate). I don't spend much time on fiction or entertainment writing, but the book makes a nice break from serious philosophical thinking, trying to learn computer languages, building websites, and solving the world's problems.

(The) Case Against The Fed, by Murray N. Rothbard (ISBN-10: 094546617X, ISBN-13: 978-0945466178) - "This book, written by Murray Rothbard, an economist and historian of fairly well known repute, is a scathing attack on not only the Federal Reserve, but the interests that created this institution. Rothbard is an adept writer, as he takes a concept that can be fairly daunting and makes it accessible to the those readers without an economics background . . . The book starts by discussing the biggest problem with the Federal Reserve system, which is fractional reserve banking. Rothbard explains how this system is only functioning because people believe that it works. If there was a run on banks tomorrow, the entire financial system would collapse, because there isn't enough "real" money in reserve to cover all of the bank notes in circulation. Rothbard believes that it is the Fed that causes inflation, and that the Fed is the sole source of inflation in society. It can be a confusing issue to explain, but Rothbard makes it easy."

(The) Case for Father Custody, by Daniel Amneus (ISBN-10: 0961086467, ISBN-13: 978-0961086466)

(A) Caveat Against Injustice, or, An Inquiry into the Evils of a Fluctuating Medium of Exchange, by Judge Roger Sherman, the only man to have signed all four of America's most precious founding documents, The Continental Association of 1774, The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution. Originally published in 1752, F. Tupper Saussy discovered one of the only two remaining copies in the world of this work in the collection of the late Senator George Prisbie Hoar (lawyer, representative, and grandson of Roger Sherman) and reprinted it.

(The) Christian God, by Richard G. Swineburne - also available at - "Though I am sure Swinburne would have responses to these questions, it seems to me that ultimately, the only satisfactory way to address these questions is either to come up with an a priori proof that God exists, or with a better inductive argument for God's existence, or to 'go pragmatic', that is, to argue that one should take into account the pragmatic considerations in whether or not one should believe, or assume for practical purposes, that God exists. The latter strategy is perhaps the easiest. The theist can encourage us to think about what is the pragmatic difference in whether one assumes that God exists and lives accordingly, or whether one chooses not to do so. What is the potential value at stake in living a religious life (or in not doing so), if God does exist (or if God does not exist)? In effect, Swinburne does something like this in his other book, Faith and Reason. As Swinburne might legitimately point out, this is no longer to argue that the hypothesis God exists is objectively probable, but rather to argue that the belief in God, or assumption for practical purpose that God exists, is justifiable or rational in some other way. However, it may be the best the theist can do, until and unless more compelling empirical evidence of God's existence is forthcoming." - from Joshua Golding's review of Richard G. Swineburne's The Christian God.

Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the U.S., by Benjamin F. Morris

Cleansing or Surgery, by the Embassy of Heaven Church - I personally succeeded in getting rid of kidney stones with the apple juice cleansing method. I didn't have to go to my primary care doc. Of course, the allotropic, slash-burn-poison, government-monopoly- medical-culture docs would claim I never had kidney stones. Wrong! It's an experience no one could ever forget!

Coercing Virtue: The Worldwide Rule of Judges, by Robert H. Bork (ISBN-10: 0844741620, ISBN-13: 978-0844741628)

Commentary On Galations, by Martin Luther - Kregel Publications (ASIN: B000O1LVF8, ISBN: 978-0-8254-3083-1) - "One of the most outstanding expositions of Galations ever written, noted for its doctrinal soundness."

(The) Common Law, by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (ISBN: 0-486-26746-6 pbk) - By Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., the judicial icon who, as a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, invented the so-called "clear and present danger" doctrine to justify throwing a nonviolent socialist activist in prison merely for passing out anti-draft flyers during war (WWI — Schenck called it a "bankers' war") time. See Schenck v. U.S. , 249 U.S. 47 (1919). Holmes later repented of his anti-free-speech stance, blaming it on the "exigencies" and passions of war (Sound familiar?), but although he tried to reverse himself, he could never get a majority of the court to go along with his pro-free-speech conversion. See e.g., Abrams v. U S , 250 U.S. 616 (1919), Frohwerk v. U S , 249 U.S. 204 (1919), Debs v. U S , 249 U.S. 211 (1919).

In my opinion, this "dry" book, enjoyable only by legal geeks like me — I read U.S. Supreme Court opinions for a hobby — is important, if for no other reason than one sentence on p.66 regarding the intent of a person's acts: "Acts should be judged by their tendency under the known circumstances, not by the actual intent which accompanies them."

You can find and read U.S. Supreme Court decisions online at by entering the numbers 110 and 421 in the appropriate boxes and clicking on the "get it" button. U.S. Supreme Court decisions are also located at

Dead Doctors Don't Lie 0974858102, by Joel Wallach, B.S., D.V.M., N.D &  Ma Lan, M.D., M.S. (ISBN: (1-880692-40-6) (ISBN-10:ISBN-13: 978-0974858104) - I absolutely love this guy! I wouldn't care if everything he says were wrong and his products didn't work (not the case). What Wallach and his wife say MUST be said. The allotropic, slash-burn-poison, government-monopoly- medical-profession-culture docs are the medical-profession-culture's point men. Without them, the corrupt FDA and the giant pharmaceutical corporations couldn't do diddley squat. As it is, because they have a government-granted monopoly on pain control, their treat-the-symptoms-not-the-causes price gouging has led inflation for over thirty years, and gotten worse by the month. One wannabe-clever demonizing reviewer wrote, "Shame on this man for slamming a group of professionals that in the most part are there to help hummanity. A shameful book. I wonder how it ever got published." This jerk obviously has all the appearances of being put up to his (or her) "review" by the allotropic, slash-burn-poison, government-monopoly- medical-profession- culture. Click this link to read the solution to settling the docs' government- granted monopoly on pain control. God bless Joel Wallach, B.S., D.V.M., N.D &  Ma Lan, M.D., M.S.! See also Forbidden Medicine: Is Effective Non-toxic Cancer Treatment Being Suppressed?, by Ellen Hodgson Brown, J.D. (ISBN-10: 0979560837, ISBN-13: 978-0979560835) below. There are growing numbers of such books. NEVER forget this crucial economics-related fact: if everyone knew how to stay well and at peace with their neighbors, doctors and lawyers would have to finds some other way to make a living. Guess what else: every last one of them would rather be raking in huge bucks than flipping burgers. Follow the money, THAT tells you where the medical profession's heart is! What's going to be fun is watching to see how doctors and lawyers try to survive as the pending Economic Holocaust worsens.

Fowler (ISBN-10: 1853263184, ISBN-13: 978-1853263187) This edition is taken from the original 1926 publication and has become the standard work on the expression with clarity and precision of both the spoken and written word. (E.g. "a, an. 1. A is used before all consonants except silent h (a history,an hour) ; an was formerly usual before an unaccented syllable beginning...") "My reluctance to quote at such length from the great Fowler is mitigated by my serious wish that students of the English language would themselves take the initiative of familiarizing themselves with the profundities and niceties of the points being made by Mr. Fowler." — William F. Buckley, Jr. in his column "Fowlerspeak - Goodspeak." See also, "The King's English" (online at, by H.W. Fowler.

Dishonest Money: Financing the Road to Ruin, by Joseph Plummer (ISBN-10: 1439214115, ISBN-13: 978-1439214114) - Testimonial by Clara Ann Plummer (Joseph's mother): "My husband and I are lucky to know the author of this book. He happens to be my son. He began warning us to get my husband's retirement money out of the stock market in 2007 and by early 2008 he was no longer recommending that we do so, he was telling us to.

I read an early version of "Dishonest Money" and, trusting the information and warnings, convinced my husband to get his money out. But then our local banker, behind my back, talked my husband into putting the funds back in. This banker said that it was crazy to just leave "so much money sitting idle and earning nothing." To be safe, the banker put all of the money (about $55,000) into a "strong company that has been around forever and is solid as a rock."

By some miracle I found out that this had happened. I had a fit and, long story short, the money was taken back out. About two months later that "solid company" (AIG) evaporated. ...And with it would have gone nearly every penny of my husband's savings.

It is terrible that so many people lost everything because they didn't get the warning that my husband and I got. It is unbelievable that I lived for 60 years without ever understanding what a rotten and dishonest system these crooks have given us. Dishonest Money explains this "system" in terms anyone can understand. If enough of us understand it, we can demand something better. Most important, we can prevent them from ever doing this to us again."

There are three main technologies married together to create usable, standards-compliant web designs: XHTML for data structure, Cascading Style Sheets for styling your data, and JavaScript for adding dynamic effects and manipulating structure on the fly using the Document Object Model. This book is about the latter of the three."

JFK: The Last Dissenting Witness, by Bill Sloan (ISBN-10: 0882899228, ISBN-13: 978-0882899220) - Jean Hill's Eye-Witness Story. "Jean Hill saw President Kennedy shot and she believed that at least one of the shooters was on the grassy knoll behind the fence and she estimated that between 4 and 6 shots were fired. Her story was heavily disputed by first the Secret Service who kept her in custody for hours on that fateful day, the CIA agent who was present in her first meeting with the FBI, and the FBI who interviewed her extensively for days after the assassination, as well as the Warren Commission's attorney who humiliated and intimidated her before taking her testimony for the Warren Commission." "Arlen Specter, who questioned [Jean Hill] in Dallas for the Warren Commission, was the one who proposed the 'single bullet theory' that was adopted by the Warren Commission. His butchered transcript of her testimony to the Warren Commission was "heavily edited, completely distorted and shamelessly fabricated."

Looking Backward: 2000-1887, by Edward Bellamy (ISBN-10: 1420925709, ISBN-13: 978-1420925708) This ultimate of all socialist-utopian books is so beautiful it may bring tears to your eyes, as it did mine when I was much younger and more ignorant. It may be the most emotionally brilliant apology for statism ever written — which means that if you hate socialism, and want to stand against it, you need to read this book to better understand what kind of control-freak minds you are up against.

Makers and Takers: How Wealth and Progress Are Made and How They Are Taken Away or Prevented, by Edmund Contoski - (ISBN-10: 0965500748, ISBN-13: 978-0965500746) - "Why Freedom Works (And Coercion Doesn't in One Lesson . . . Anyone who understands the propaganda model, even if they fervently deny its existence, realizes that it is not worthy of 'conspiracy theory' derision." Too many people get into the "left-right" bologna. Whether intentionally or not, Chomsky is definitely worth your attention because of his discussion of the MECAHANICS of any mass propaganda system. Whatever Chomsky's agenda may be, it is irrelevant to any individualist's self-education as to the workings of propaganda apparatuses. So, by all means check out both his book, and the movie of the same name.

Tucker (ISBN-10: 039309040X, ISBN-13: 978-0393090406) - Know thine enemy! - It's not necessary to read Marx's Das Kapital. The whole huge and impressive book fails because it is founded in its entirety on the erroneous premise that "value" is an empirically objective reality which can be regulated and taxed by government, when in simple self-evident fact, "value" is an individual subjective notion purely in the eye of the beholder. After wading laboriously through the entire ponderous book, I was astounded by a simple common-sense revelation which can be easily demonstrated: you might be willing to pay $10/lb to eat beef liver, while you could not pay me $100/lb to eat it. What then is the measurable, regulatable "value" of beef liver? Checkmate, Karl, baby! - JRW

"Book Description

'Saving yourself and America from financial ruin. Just as all the truths of God's reality are basically simple, once we let ourselves discover them, so THE MIRIACLE ON MAIN STREET reveals the beautiful but simple truth of how the individual in America today can restore freedom. The book is free from hatred, hostility, or revenge. It's the positive, loving nature of its answers that gives it its great power. Its course of action is fun! "Read it and try its recommendations. You'll like yourself more for doing so. And your children and grandchildren will love you for it!' - Bob Crane

About the Author

Frederick Tupper Saussy's forebears emigrated from France to Savannah, Georgia, in the early 19th century "not because of any 'American Dream'," he explains, "but because the people of the United States had just created the world's finest Constitution. The French know quality." The first Eldest son in four generations not to become a professional lawyer, Saussy has taught school, dealt in gold and silver, won three Grammy nominations for his achievements as a pop composer and producer, owned restaurants, acted on the stage, and written and arranged the music for Anita Bryant's Orange Juice network TV commercials."

My Life As A Radical Lawyer, by William M Kunstler (ISBN-10: 0806517557, ISBN-13: 978-0806517551) - Kunsler's book gives the reader insight into the arrogant control-freak tyranny of U.S. District Court Judge Julius Hoffman, a judge in the mold of the murderous judges Joseph Gary (of Haymarket Riot infamy) and Webster Thayer (of Sacco & Vanzetti infamy). Another such tyrannical judge is Edward Lodge, who ordered the "diesel therapy" torturing of Congressman George V. Hansen.

Syntactic Structures, by Noam Chomsky (ISBN-10: 3110172798, ISBN-13: 978-3110172799) - "[Chomsky's] contribution to linguistics is profound. His Syntactic Structures (1957) is considered to be one of the intellectual achievements of the 20th century. Chomsky pioneered the idea that each human child has an innate capacity to master the grammar and deep structure of language. His insight was based on the observation that children learn grammar at a rate far greater than can be explained by their extrapolating from examples given to them. They must therefore have an innate capacity not only to learn language but also to understand how it works. Because language acquisition is universal, all languages must share the same fundamental structure or 'depth grammar'. Chomsky's revolutionary work on grammar and language deeply influenced not only linguistics, but also cognitive science in general. It has had a major impact on his political thinking as well. What Chomsky offers is, in the words of the author Collin Coyne, an 'account of international power exchange from the linguist's perspective'. For Chomsky, the word 'democracy' has two quite distinct meanings. According to the dictionary, a system is democratic to the extent that its citizens have ways to participate in decisions about public affairs. In the ideological sense of democracy, a society is deemed democratic by the US only if its business is run in a way that is subordinate to the interests of US business." — Neil Clark, New Stateman (If you exchange the phrase "interests of the established neo-feudalistic order" for Neil Clark's phrase "interests of US business", you have a good idea why some of Chomsky's ideas would appeal to anti-statists, and why I made reference to Chomsky on this website. — JRW)

(The) Underground History of American Education, by John Taylor Gatto (ISBN-10: 0945700040, ISBN-13: 978-0945700043) - "In the final analysis, Gatto believes that compulsory, government-run schooling is inherently destructive to true education, the cultivation of self-reliance, and indeed to individualism - which used to be a defining element of the American character. The true purpose of our public school system in reality has more to do with control than it does with learning. This does not mean that rank-and-file teachers, principals, and even superintendents believe they are making students dumber, more conformist, less self-reliant, less capable of genuine analytical, independent thought, and more easily controlled; most people involved in the system no doubt believe that they are trying their best to really teach their students. However, the system itself (which Gatto often characterizes as a complex web) ensures that its real purpose is served, despite the efforts of individual reformers within it - that true democracy is rendered unworkable even as the trappings of democracy are allegedly bolstered. Seen in this light, these institutions that produce barely literate, dependent, conformist, incomplete individuals full of emotional and psychological problems, who lack real knowledge (and whose capacity for acquiring such is deliberately weakened or eliminated), and who are just `educated' enough to pay their taxes and buy the latest products, are not, in fact, failing schools - on the contrary, if we are to believe Gatto's analysis, they are performing their designated function PERFECTLY. That purpose is to mold people in such a way as to make them more easily controlled by corporations and the state (a clear-cut example of how, contrary to popular myth, the interests of big business and those of big government more often than not coincide.) "

(The) Velveteen Rabbit or How Toys Become Real, by Margery Williams - (ISBN-10: 0757303331, ISBN-13: 978-0757303333) - Available at - "The Velveteen Rabbit is a timeless tale of friendship, love, acceptance and honesty. When the world seems uncertain, Margery Williams's classic story reminds all of us what really matters."

An exerpt: "'What is REAL?' asked the Rabbit one day . . . 'Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?' 'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.' 'Does it hurt?' asked the Rabbit. 'Sometimes,' said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. 'When you are Real you don't mind being hurt.' 'Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,' he asked, 'or bit by bit?' 'It doesn't happen all at once,' said the Skin Horse. 'You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand.'"
